Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling6

Scaling and root planing is a deep-cleaning treatment designed to address gum disease and help restore healthier gums. At Poplar Square Dental, we recommend this service when there is evidence of periodontal infection—such as gum bleeding, swelling, persistent bad breath, gum recession, or deeper “pockets” around the teeth where bacteria can build up below the gumline.

The process focuses on removing plaque, tartar, and bacteria from areas a standard cleaning can’t reach. Scaling carefully clears hardened buildup from the tooth surfaces and from beneath the gums. Root planing then smooths the exposed root surfaces, helping remove bacterial toxins and making it more difficult for plaque to reattach. This smoother surface also encourages the gums to tighten and heal, reducing pocket depth over time.

For comfort, we can use numbing options as needed, and treatment is often completed in sections of the mouth over one or more visits, depending on the severity of inflammation and buildup.

Afterward, it’s normal to experience mild tenderness or sensitivity for a short time. We’ll provide clear home-care instructions and may recommend a follow-up visit to evaluate healing and measure improvement.

The benefits of scaling and root planing are significant. It can reduce gum inflammation and bleeding, improve breath, slow or stop progression of periodontal disease, and help protect the bone and tissues that support your teeth. It’s also an important step in lowering the risk of tooth mobility and tooth loss related to advanced gum infection.

If you’ve noticed changes in your gums or it’s been a while since your last dental visit, schedule an evaluation at Poplar Square Dental. Early periodontal care can make a lasting difference.
